Artist Research: Andy Mangold

After recently starting a new project with a brief of designing a sculpture, and came across a really great typography sculptor, Ebon Heath.

His work is unique and original. As an artist, his typographical sculptures exude an illusionary effect to the vision of the average eye. The way he has used the perspective of type by altering the different letter sizes creating a three dimensional effect. Using simple things such as hanging letters from string and using a blacked out background creates the dramatical effect he inflicts and portrays in his images. Waves, straight lines, curved lines, hanging, interlocking, no matter what kind of way he displays his work, it always seems perfected.

Lucas Maleonte

Looking through some recent/ modern artists and a video from Lucas Maleonte gradually building up his image of below:

Originally sketching on a blackboard with chalk and eventually building up to this amazing image and is now wall art.

stenSOUL - News and Updates: Self Portrait stencil on AUSTRAILA.com!

Here's a video of some upcoming tours and live galleries an artist i've been recently looking at called 'StenSOUL' whilst looking more into depth on the album's artwork for 21st Century Breakdown from Green Day. The artwork is inspired by at least 20 different artists and are highly credited for it.

Life Drawings

Here i used charcoal on cartridge paper, darkening and sketching in the chade of the model.

Here's a mix between pastel, charcoal and chalk, each used for skin tines and highlights of where light is on the model, and charcoal for the shading etc.
Here are my quick 1 minute sketches of the model, picking out each body part and scaling using other body parts to keep in proportion.

Here's a few illustrations I've done recently of friends of mine and myself. I used Illustrator to trace the images and used certain pastel colours and used no outline on anything (apart from certain details), just plain colours as i am starting to really love this kind of art.

Film TV Title Sequence

Here's a screenshot of the intro for the film 'The Number 23'

Using simple typography, and a relevant fast flowing animation of none stop typography, with added images. I think this works really well, not only because it looks good but it relates to the film and the background story itself.

Illustration Friday- Toy

Here's an image i created using stencils/ masks of Acrylic black paint. As the topic this week was the word 'toy' i wanted to go for another deep meaningful piece to sybolise that todays toys, or technology is made out to be a lot more important than mankind itself, so i used an old looking tele  stencil to represent the size of technology & made sure the boy was smaller to show that technology is bigger/ important than him. Also to symbolize that the technology or what people class as toys in todays world, is drawing in children, or even any aged people for that matter.

Here i have shown the development of removing any unnecessary marking changing positions & sizes, and being put into/ onto another picture as a graffiti, using a stock image.

Illustration Friday- Cultivate

Here for the word cultivate, i've gone for the whole cultivation of the change of music, & it's influences. At completely opposite ends of fashion, stereotype & style, is a so called 'chav' & and an 'emo'. Classed 'chav' for always wearing a hat & hoody & tracksuits, & 'emo' because of hairstyles, tight clothing & slim most of the time.

I've looked at a few pictures of chavs and drew out a few drawings & finalized with the one above on the left, & same with the one on the right, & picked out the light and dark & stenciled.

Illustration Friday- Stir

I took a picture of myself, and cut me out, and the same with the spoon & coffee cup & plate. Using photoshop filters and layer overlays, i created the above.
Here's a photoshoped looking stencil i did of the above image.

Illustration Friday- Warning.

So with my first idea i wanted to originally do a a huge stencil and graffiti it somewhere nearby my neighborhood, but realized it's against the law, unfortunately. But i then decided to do it A4 size, first painting the whole page black with stroked edges, and the two warning signs stenciled with a sponge, to make it look like a sprayed effect.

Here's a digital image of my interpretation of Warning. I decided to use Adobe Illustrator to trace a politician, then replaced his facial features with a warning sign, to symbolize that the government, or politicians, or highly looked upon people are people who are causing damages, so it's a 'Beware of ...' kind of image.

The lyrics are taken from a song from Green Day entitled 'Warning.' The song is about not listening to the warning signs that country leaders give out, or that society are making out is bad for you, and to defy them just to be rebellious and do what you will. My own interpretation of the lyrics used on this image, is that instead of learning about everything, and taking everything into consideration, just get on with it, and if not, be prepared for a lot of authority to be thrown right back at you.

Artist Review: Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon, lived a 82 year long life, from 28 October 1909 to 28 April 1992 & was born into Dublin. Bacon is well known for his raw & graphic imagery he shows in nearly all his self made images. Most ways of which people describe or portray Bacon's work is as if he always paints them within cages, or in a box like shape & also with a totally different background from what he was drawing from.. Or so it seemed.

Also many peoples opinions leaned toward the fact that he had a cruel mind for his characters in his paintings, or images, as though they were all a victim of something terrible. All his paintings were in some way or another emotional, which is hard to put into anything really, especially from someone who comes from designing & decorating interiors and furniture & rugs.

''Bacon visited Paris in 1935, purchasing there a second-hand book on 'Diseases of the Mouth' containing high quality hand-coloured plates of both open mouths and oral interiors, which haunted and obsessed him for the remainder of his life''

The above played a great importance in Bacon's life, because if it wasn't for that, I more than likely wouldn't be writing this.

Even though Bacon rumored never really went to school, his works shown a lot more potential then those who had O levels and diplomas. Bacon started by copy other artist but using different media such as water painting. Then many years passed for him, and worked his way through a lot of media which he named as 'meaningful experiments'. Using a lot of oils in the more later life of his, is when his artwork really peaked in  my opinion.

Illustration Friday. 27. 02. 2011.

This weeks illustration was Swarm of which i first thought of a swarm of birds or fish. So i originally drew a Shark and thought of someway of putting it into the image of the swarm of fish, which then i decided to do a digital version of the Shark, which i overlayed on the fish, to try and make it look like it was underneath. Then i placed the word SWARM ontop of everything & again overlayed that.

Layers.
Here's a meaningless, thoughtless image I created using layers of pieces of paper i found around the house, ripped & stuck onto the paper using masking tape. And finally drenching the paper in different coloured water based paints, then splattered with various colours again.

Artist Review: Lucian Frued.

Lucian Freud was born into Berlin, Germany 1922. Freud has been reconised to be the greatest figurative painter of all time. Using famous people, people he knew, family, friends & didn’t use so called ‘profetional models.’ His reasoning for not using models was such a good reason, explaining that he‘d rather use someone who actually wanted to be in pictures for a reason, rather than someone who wanted to get paid. Freud studied at the central school of art, East Anglian school of painting and drawing, & Goldsmiths’ College.

Freud’s first exhibition was in 1974 at, Hayward gallery in London, & his first ‘sell out’ exhibition was in 2002 at the Tate Gallery. Freud was extremely into comic strips, which reflected into his work massivly. As all great artists, he started out copying the work of Ingres, in the same style and media chooice.

Ever snice Frued’s work first began, his work has changed quite alot, come from Surrealism, & mixing it with realism & expressionism. Also starting off his career by drawing simple objects such as plants, people or animals. Around 1950 he started to really focus on thick impastoed portraits, using real life imagery, with his own genred touch to his pieces.

After 1956, he stated creates his images so much in his own way hat it was hugely reckognisable, using stiffer hogshair brushes instead of his fine pointed sable brushes.

Using any of his later, more recent work, and comparing it to his old work, you can see blatently the difference & just how he’s changed his work. Such as now his work is much more realistic in his own way, wheras before his work was, as i’ve previously stated, alot more surrealism.

During an undated interview i’ve read, he said ‘if I could give anyone a tip for painting, is that you should always sit down & paint.’

Illustration Friday. 11.02.2011

So this Illustration Friday was to do with the word reverse. Normally when it comes to picking something to draw associating with a word, i normally have my mind set on something within days, but for the word 'Reverse' i just really couldn't. So after hours of coming up with ideas, i just thought i'd do it the say after & put on the dvd 'Saw 3'. It was then when a woman in a reverse bear trap that i thought i could only think of. So i paused the screen and drew a rough sketch of the woman onto a a5 sketch pad. I then mixed a variety of water colours for all the colours used in the image, & did a thick, sketchy outline in black acrylic.

Surrender.

Having the word Surrender thrown at you is really powerful, but nothing sprang straight to mind for me. the only think I could think of is Politicians, and suicidal guy/ girl.

The 3 images you see are some of my own interpretations of what comes to mind when the word Surrender is used with an imagination. I stenciled the first image, draw, shaded and textured the second, and drew with marker on the third image, using only black, to create a 2 colored piece, to represent to have to options when in a situation of surrender, to either give up, or try one last time.

Here is a slightly detailed drawing/ sketch of a Dust Mite.
First i drew the layout/ basic parts of the Mite, such as the body, legs and pincer like face, and then drew into the drawing, whilst adding shadings and texturing as i went along. Type of pencil I used was a HB regular, and was drawn into an A4 sketch pad, & used a simple image from Google which can be referenced from.

Illustration Friday. 28.01.2011

In the top picture is a quick doodle of a chicken i drew whilst watching a film. Nothing fancy, just literally a quick basic body parted drawing of a plain old chicken.
Below is a Photoshopped version of the doodled chicken. Firstly i drew an outline of the drawing, with a few inline markings of the wing, head and legs. Then totally filled the blank areas with shades of Orange, Red & Black, using the brush preset 112, to create a feather like texture on the image.
Comments:
  • Spend more time in media & texture choice.
  • Add more in-depth of colour & shading.
  • Think more about meaning & style.
  • Use more media than pen.

Article Review: ‘Greenwash Guide’.

‘Greenwash is with us, and unless we take action, it is likely to be with us to stay. Greenwash is an environmental claim which is unsubstantiated (a fib) or irrelevant (a distraction). Found in advertising, PR or on packaging, and made about people, organizations and products. Greenwash is an old concept, wrapped in a very incarnation’- The Greenwash Guide.

After thoroughly reading through the Greenwash Guide, i’ve realized by this guide majorly pointing it out that Greenwash is just a false environmental phrase which was made, or is used still to cause a distraction to the audience. The concept was established a while back and can still be found today n most packaging products, and be found on organizations.

Reviewing blogging.

I think the way of blogging, like blogging your work, seeing other blogs & other peoples work really is the way forward in careers. Near enough every piece of work people do, can easily be blogged about, on any blogging site. Simply uploading a work of art, and then explaining, it, or even just uploading the picture itself.
Anyone can look back through all your work thats been uploaded of course, and not depending on time you uploaded it either. Whether its someone from Uni, or your grandad at home, anyone can see it, anyone can re blog it, & any one can comment.. Just what other way can someone do some things?

The Festival of Britain.

The Festival of Britain was an Exibition in London, & opened 3rd May, 1951.

The Graphic Designer for FOB was called Abram Games (a artist I’ve spoke about on eariler posts) & created official war posters & design the Fatival of Britains symbol/ logo.
The Festiva itself has over 19 main places which you can look upon, like the Skylon, The Dome of Discovery, The Royal festival Hall, The Telekinema, etc..
More can be looked at through:

A finished photoshop montage from an assignment I had to complete at college.
Using scanned images of album covers, both fron and back, using a recent photo shoot, I managed to create what you can see above, using layers, rasters, overlay, filters & basic side tools, & creating something that has a little bit of everything this band, Green Day, has done within the last 23 years.

University course review: Leeds.

Course placement:           Leeds Met.
Course name:                  BA (Hons) Graphic & Communication Design.
Course content:               Take on historic, culture, technology aspect of Graphic Design, branding, advertising, animation.
Reason of interest:          Another Uni that’s a little bit further away than the courses i’ve been looking at. Which is the main reason of why i looked & researched about this course in particular.
Course Requirments:       N/a.
Own Opinion:
i personally think that they should put the course requirments onto the online information about the course, mainly for the fact that some people would know for deffinate that if they’re interested in going there, they would know literally know what they have to do, instead of sending off for a more ‘advanced’ info pack about this particular course.

University course review: Manchester.

Course placement:         Manchesterfield.
Course Name:                BA (Hons) Graphic Design.
Course Content:            Graphic Design, print based or digital media, technical & concepual skills.
Reason of Interest:       Further away from home, been rated a good clean uni.
Course requirments:     240 UCAS points.
Own Opinion:
Like i said, Manchester is slightly further away than most uni’s i’ve looked at before, but im still unsure whether or not i want to be going further away. The Uni is said to be good in Art & Design areas of there, and would be good to carry on with.
